About Christy's Courage
Esophageal atresia is a rare congenital condition that can feel overwhelming for families. At Christy's Courage, we understand the unique challenges those born with esophageal atresia (EA) face because our founder, Christy Cook, has lived through them. Our organization is dedicated to providing essential support, resources, and hope to EA/TEF patients and their families, helping them navigate the complexities of this diagnosis and live fulfilling lives.
Christy Cook's Journey with Esophageal Atresia
Christy Cook was born with EA/TEF in Baltimore, Maryland 1963. From the very first day of her life, she underwent numerous surgeries to correct the long gap between her esophagus and stomach. Despite the medical hurdles and life-threatening complications, including the need for a gastrostomy tube and several failed surgeries, Christy's perseverance and the dedication of her doctors resulted in a successful, though unconventional, solution.
Her journey, which included innovative surgeries like a colonic interposition, has been documented in medical journals and has served as a learning tool for medical students. Christy's experience with esophageal atresia has been more than just a personal battle; it has become the foundation for Christy's Courage. Her story is a testament to the resilience and determination of those living with EA, and it drives our mission to support others on their journey.
Empowering the EA/TEF Community
Christy's Courage is the only nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to supporting esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) patients. We aim to improve the lives of EA/TEF patients, their families, and caretakers by offering essential products, support groups, medical education, pharmaceutical and medical equipment, and holistic treatment resources. We aim to provide the support and resources Christy wished she had during her journey, helping others navigate the complexities of esophageal atresia with confidence and hope.
